Gwendolyn Brown is an artist from Ellicottville, New York. She currently lives and works in Toronto, Canada, as a fine arts artist. In 2018, Brown graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design University in Toronto, from which she received a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts), specializing in criticism and curatorial practice, with a minor in drawing and painting. . The artist will subsequently develop her skills in 2017 at OCAD University, in an off-campus program in Florence. She will live and produce her art in Italy for a full year. With exhibitions and curating nationally and internationally, Gwendolyn Brown's work can be seen in Italy, Canada, and throughout the United States.
The artist's work is motivated by her interest in the trivial gestures that we make on a daily basis. Working with the still life genre therefore allows her to demonstrate the way humans touch and manipulate materials in their routines. By using images of objects and materials that are familiar, Brown attempts to evoke memories and create psychological reactions in the viewer's mind, all with the idea of drawing attention to what may be neglected. The artist hopes that her work creates a space for contemplation in which small details, like light hitting an object or the intricate formation of folds in a sheet, can transform the mundane.
