Lavoie, Joël

Born in 1989 in Rimouski, in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, Joël moved to Québec City to pursue university studies. Initially drawn to drawing, a wrist injury led him to explore painting—a medium that would become central to his artistic practice.

His work reflects his relationship with the maritime landscape: the movement of the tides, their natural rhythm, and the power of the elements. Informed by photography, his practice places a strong emphasis on slow observation and the appreciation of simple things. The canvases thus become exploratory spaces between control and surrender, where the landscape functions as both subject and inner state.

His works revolve around a sensitive duality, a dialogue between opposing yet complementary forces. Within this balance, painting emerges as a space for meditation and introspection, where the darker and lighter aspects that inhabit us meet.
