Lenouvel, Hervé

Born in Brittany, France, in 1960, I spent my childhood in the countryside near the legendary Forest of Brocéliande. Growing up in a rural environment, I developed an early passion for drawing, followed by painting, and formed a deep, almost spiritual connection with nature, which has remained my primary source of inspiration ever since.

A self-taught artist, I immersed myself in books on a wide range of painting techniques, experimenting with watercolor and gouache before ultimately embracing oil painting. Its rich texture and viscosity offer a sensual quality that I have never found in any other medium.

At the beginning of my career, my work was primarily figurative. Over time, however, I developed a more instinctive approach, creating a suggestive pictorial language that borders on abstraction. Although I am often described as an abstract painter, I consider myself deeply figurative at heart, as my subjects are always rooted in the natural world. I believe that the abstraction lies in the viewer's perception rather than in my own intention.

Nature remains my sole source of inspiration. To me, it is an immense space of freedom. My paintings emerge from memories and observations of the landscapes that surround me. During my daily walks, I mentally absorb the places I encounter, drawing inspiration from everything nature offers: sunshine and rain, wind, fallen leaves and new buds, the light of dawn and dusk.

Back in the studio, I work wet-on-wet, painting quickly and retaining only what is essential. Painting is, for me, a game of observation and memory, an attempt to distill the essence of what I have seen in order to convey both the emotion it awakened and my state of mind in that moment. I learned to paint much as a craftsman learns a trade, but painting is about far more than technique. One must go beyond technical mastery, bringing something deeply personal to the canvas, discovering oneself, and allowing one's own character to emerge. That, to me, is the most fascinating part of being an artist. Trees, water, sky, and earth take shape spontaneously as the painting evolves, always leaving ample room for the viewer's imagination.

In my work, chromatic harmony remains the cornerstone of every composition. I see myself above all as a painter of colour: colour alone guides me across the canvas. I lay down my colours, build the composition, and continue working until I find its perfect balance. With a rich and generous palette, my paintings invite viewers to wander through an archipelago of playful visions, expressing the intensity of my inner journey.

Today, I continue to live and work in Brittany. My paintings have been exhibited for many years in France, England, Canada, and the United States.
